In this post, we’ll go over the different avenues you can take as a business owner when building your website.
Option #1 | DIY
You can take the DIY route and try to build something yourself. You’ll need to figure out how to buy a domain, set up hosting, manage the CMS (content management system), create images, etc. Is it the best use of your time as a business owner? Probably not, but that’s entirely your opinion. You might manage to get something nice up with a service like SquareSpace or Wix. Will the site function? Sure. Will it be enough? That depends on what your goals are.
Website Category: Business-Card-Website – it provides information, it’s live, people can find it. Does it help grow your business? No.
Option #2 | Upwork, Craigslist, Your Cousin Bob
Next, you have the designers/developers that you can find on websites like Upwork, Craigslist, or maybe you have a cousin Bob who sort of knows how to build websites. Is there anything wrong with going with this route? Again, it depends on your business goals. These designers/developers usually fall into one of two categories 1) high volume – because they charge so little, they have to really pump out websites to pay the bills. As you could probably guess quality of work suffers. 2) low experience – this would be your cousin Bob that is maybe just starting out and charges $800 because he’s just trying to get the business, experience, and build up his portfolio.
Website Category: Commodity-Website – these sites are typically purchased by business owners who view a website as another line on the expense sheet as opposed to an investment that will (if done right), have a major ROI and actually grow business.
Option #3 | Web Agencies & Respected Designers/Developers
Lastly, we have the agency and experienced designer/developer option. As you could probably guess this option is more costly, however, the quality of work is better top-to-bottom. The easiest way to describe the difference between option #2 and option #3 would be to look at option #2 as just a “web guy” who takes orders, and focuses on how awesome the newest technology is as opposed to #3 who takes on the role of a “web consultant” that understands business objectives and at the end of the day all you care about is growing your business. Technology is just a way to help accomplish that. With this option, you’ll have an incredible experience, learn more than you probably expected, and get the results you were looking for.
Website Category: Strategy-Driven-Website – these sites are tailored to your brand, business goals, and target market. They are always built with traffic, leads, and revenue in mind. These sites help grow your business, and they will probably be in ways you didn’t even know were possible.
